Our Story

Fight Against Desert Encroachment (FADE) Africa was founded in May 2000 and has over the years championed the fight against environment degradation, global warming and climate change in sub-Saharan Africa. FADE Africa has singularly driven the importance of planting trees in combating the effects of climate change.
In addition to her world-acclaimed “Wall of Trees” pilot project in Makoda Local Government Area of Kano State and tree planting competition across secondary schools in Kano state, FADE has been involved in tree planting campaigns across the six (6) geo-political zones in Nigeria.
Dr Newton Jibunoh, OON, the founder of FADE is popularly known as the Desert-Warrior. He has crossed the Sahara Desert from Lagos to London three times; twice as solo efforts and once in the company of five other warriors.
FADE Africa is presently accredited by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Governing Council/Global Ministerial Environment Forum and endorsed by the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). It currently has working partnerships with Lagos, Delta, Ogun, Kano and Jigawa State governments.
FADE Africa is also in partnership with the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) on the bridging and greening of the Sahara desert. A special purpose vehicle known as the Nigerian Society of Engineers – Taming African Deserts (NSE-TAD) to drive the project has been established and the Governing Council and Boards inaugurated.
FADE Africa is made up of skilled and seasoned professionals with collective proven track records in strategic analysis, project and programme management, building and construction, environmental management, agro-forestry and community development.

"If you fly and drive across the countries of the world as I have done in the last 45 years, you will notice that our planet earth that was so blue and green has become gray and brown in the last 25 years. That was about the time the effects of climate change began to be noticed by the discerning minds. But climate change phenomenon had been with us all the while; we just could not admit it, and sometimes feigned complete ignorance."

- Dr. Jibunoh

Dr. Jibunoh is a dyed in the wool environmentalist, who made three successful journeys across the Sahara Desert by car. It is worthy to note, that the theme for Dr. Jibunoh's 3rd Expedition across the Sahara, was aptly named "Desertification is Global Warming".

Through his expeditions, he noticed the deteriorating conditions of these desert-affected communities and the inhabitants as their lands are being overwhelmed by the southward advancing Sahara. As a result, he founded FADE in May 2000.

On World Environment Day, June 5th 2009, Dr. Newton Jibunoh was made the Ambassador for  Environment, Lagos State; tasked with furthering the plans to make Lagos a "green society".  He is committed to the Lagos State Government's agenda of creating a mega city with a sustainable managed environment.

The Federal Government of Nigeria, in an effort to ensure a safe environment in the Federal Capital city - Abuja, inaugurated the Abuja Green Society, to which he is the Vice Chairman.

Always innovative, Dr. Jibunoh worked in collaboration with the Lagos State Government on a reality show which allowed contestants to compete during a trip across the Sahara desert from Lagos to London. The show was used as a platform to educate people about the issues of the environment and climate change that face Nigeria.

As a doctor of Soil Engineering, Dr. Jibunoh served as the Managing Director & Chief Executive for Costain (West Africa) Plc, and later its Chairman. He is currently the Chairman of Dolphin Properties Limited, and Dolphin Works Limited.

In recognition of his works and contributions to the Engineering sector and the environment, he has received the following awards, honours, and appointments:

  •     Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Building, FNIOB;
  •     Institutionalization of Newton Jibunoh's Annual Lecture by the Nigerian Institute of Building;
  •     Doctor of Science, Honoris Corsa, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Nigeria;

  •     Vice-Chairman of the Abuja Green Society;
  •     Ambassador Emeritus for Lagos State, Nigeria in their Greening Programme; and
  •     The National Honour of Order of the Niger, OON of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

In December 2009, he was invited to join the United Nations summit on Climate Change in Copenhagen, where he presented on the importance against fighting desertification.
