In 2010, Dr Newton Jibunoh authored a book, Bridging the Sahara Desert: A Different Perspective, which has been produced in English and French. This is a Green the Sahara Desert Initiative which is as a direct consequence of his numerous efforts at proffering a lasting solution to desertification in sub-Saharan Africa and after attending several climate change summits as part of the Federal Government of Nigeria's delegate to world conferences such as in Bangkok, Copenhagen and Cancun.
The initiative is a pre-feasibility report that presents a sustainable solution for the stopping and reversal of desert encroachment by the construction of a highway passing through three major cities namely Lagos in Nigeria, Niamey in Niger Republic and Algiers in Algeria; all in sub-Saharan Africa. It is provides the option of using known technologies such as the construction of a tree corridor, provision of water while ensuring desalination facilities are made available and the completion of the existing highway, which is estimated at 4,500km.
We believe this solution will yield millions of tons of carbon credit that will improve carbon capture by depleting CO2 from the atmosphere thereby enhancing air quality of life on the African continent and the world at large.
